Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The Texans checked most of the boxes and earned a B-.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Texans would have aced it. De'Corian Clark at pick No. 161 is 39 spots clear of where he belonged. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Wilson.

They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
In the 23rd pick they get a double-digit-sack hope, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick59 Rnd2 T'Vondre Sweat
No edge and no loss on T'Vondre Sweat in pick 59; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick85 Rnd3 Payton Wilson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Payton Wilson at slot 85. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick124 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
They paid up for Jaheim Bell at pick No. 124 when waiting would have done the job. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick128 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick161 Rnd5 De'Corian Clark
De'Corian Clark in the 161st overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick236 Rnd7 Xavier Thomas
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xavier Thomas this early at Round 7, Pick 16. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick245 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
A real head-scratcher, Tanner McLachlan in the 245th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
