He was named Freshman All-America by the FWAA and The Athletic and also earned first-team all-AAC honors.
In 2021 he started all 14 games and in doing so played on 909 snaps and gave up 2 sacks and 9 total pressures on the season. At season's send Smith was handed ALL-ACC honors although as a second teamer.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Huge powerful player with big hands (10 3/4") and wing span (6'11 1/8")
- Surprising lateral quickness given his size
- Plays with explosive violent style that dominates less imposing defenders
- Elite power at the POA who simply wound be bull rushed
- Plays with appropriate wide base and intelligence, instincts, and agility to seal the edge. Aggressive extending with power to punch and looks comfortable in space.
- Above-average football smarts and general intelligence. Plays with a nasty streak. Solid character and work ethic.
- Has the feet to adjust when he anticipates what's coming. Effective trapping and bends at the knees with adequate core strength to absorb the bull rush. Can clear a path at the second level if he hits the target.
- Foot speed and quickness are very good, but not elite.
- Elite as a power run blocker who flashes the nasty demeanor and killer instinct scouts covet
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Attacks when necessary, though he won't consistently dominate and can lose balance overextending.
- His play is often raw and disjointed - will need time to develop his skills
- Takes poor angles and misses too many blocks
- Gives up too many holding penalties - needs to stop being so grabby
- His footwork needs a lot of work and it will him very vulnerable to speed rushers at the next level
- Stops his feet after initial contact, relying on length but allowing the defender to get the corner or spin inside
- Needs to work on his technique in pass protection, using more consistent leverage and continuing to move his feet.
- Loses leverage battles and plays with high pad level. Can be late off the snap.
- Susceptible to speed rushers. Has only average quickness off the snap and doesn't possess the acceleration to corral defenders once they cross his face
Scouting Report: Summary
Tyler Smith offers elite potential due to his obvious athletic skills. He's an ultra-aggressive mauler who overpowers opponents with exceptional power and explosiveness and is one of the best-run blockers in college football. Smith however is very raw, has very undeveloped skills as a pass protector, and will no doubt need to time sit and learn the position in the pros.If Smith is drafted on his potential alone teams could argue he has value in the first round but currently, we consider him as a likely third-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.
