The Commanders got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C-. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Kalil Alexander at the 223rd pick is 42 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. It nets out a thoroughly average C-.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
They will answer for taking safety early while tight end and quarterback went begging. Lew falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Hit on Caleb Downs and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In No. 11 they get an enforcer at safety at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Pick49
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
A surprising call. With tight end and quarterback still to address, they spent the Round 2 slot on Dillon Thieneman, a safety they were not short of.
Pick71
Rnd3
Connor Lew
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Connor Lew at slot 71 is the proof. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick72
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
A'Mauri Washington slid further than he should have, and pick 72 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. The roster fit checks out.
Pick97
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
They paid a round early for D'Angelo Ponds in the 97th overall pick, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick110
Rnd4
Jadarian Price
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jadarian Price well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick145
Rnd5
Logan Jones
Logan Jones at the 145th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick187
Rnd6
Duce Robinson
Fair-plus on Duce Robinson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick198
Rnd6
Lander Barton
No edge and no loss on Lander Barton in slot 198; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick223
Rnd7
Kalil Alexander
Kalil Alexander at pick 223 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
