The phones sank the Steelers this weekend: D. The Steelers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Drew Allar at Round 3, Pick 35 regardless, 36 picks early. Put together, it is a D.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
The Lawson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. Justin Skule gives the group a proven body among the projects.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
A tidy bit of business in slot 18, where Carnell Tate graded well above the range. It fills a real need, too.
Pick34
Rnd2
Colton Hood
A tidy little value on Colton Hood in No. 34, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick35
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
No edge and no loss on Emmanuel Pregnon in the 35th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick53
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
A safety of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
They will replay Deontae Lawson at Round 3, Pick 12 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick98
Rnd3
Zachariah Branch
They went early on Zachariah Branch in pick 98, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick99
Rnd3
Drew Allar
A real head-scratcher, Drew Allar in slot 99 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick234
Rnd7
PJ Williams
PJ Williams at the 234th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
