Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Texans a B. The Texans clearly saw something nobody else did in Lake McRee, taking him 24 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
The Reese steal is the beam this whole class leans on. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
Arvell Reese at No. 28 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick38
Rnd2
Kenyon Sadiq
Somehow Kenyon Sadiq was still sitting there in Round 2, Pick 6, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick59
Rnd2
Gennings Dunker
The board had Gennings Dunker higher than the 59th overall pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick69
Rnd3
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in the 69th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick112
Rnd4
Kaytron Allen
Kaytron Allen in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick128
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Nice patience on Bryce Lance, who had no business lasting to pick No. 128. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick165
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell at slot 165 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick177
Rnd5
Zane Durant
Zane Durant at No. 177 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick221
Rnd7
Kaden Wetjen
They took Kaden Wetjen at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick243
Rnd7
Alan Herron
Alan Herron in pick 243 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick244
Rnd7
Lake McRee
Lake McRee at Round 7, Pick 28 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
