Draft Grade — Vikings
Overall
B
ValueA-
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Vikings cashed the board's mistake on Coogan: B. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Vikings watched Pat Coogan slide 39 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The Scott pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots still on the board. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
In pick No. 18 they get a matchup problem out wide at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick49
Rnd2
Chris Johnson
Chris Johnson at No. 49 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick82
Rnd3
Keionte Scott
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots to take Keionte Scott, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick97
Rnd3
Mike Washington Jr.
A running back of that caliber at the Round 3 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jude Bowry
Jude Bowry at Round 5, Pick 23 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick196
Rnd6
Beau Stephens
Beau Stephens at pick 196 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick234
Rnd7
Kobe Baynes
Kobe Baynes at the 234th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick235
Rnd7
Cameron Ball
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Cameron Ball reach slot 235 and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Pick244
Rnd7
Pat Coogan
Circle this one: Pat Coogan at slot 244 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
