A masterclass at the trade table lands the Steelers a B. The Steelers went off the board in a big way for Drew Allar, 34 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. The bottom line is a respectable B.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Stukes at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Tiernan pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Olaivavega Ioane
In pick 21 they get a building block for the line. More want than need.
Pick55
Rnd2
Caleb Tiernan
A curious use of pick No. 55. Interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Caleb Tiernan did not.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deion Burks
Deion Burks at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick85
Rnd3
Sam Roush
They paid sticker price for Sam Roush in No. 85, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick121
Rnd4
Treydan Stukes
A cornerback of that caliber at the 121st pick is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Pick123
Rnd4
Drew Allar
Drew Allar in the 123rd overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick135
Rnd4
Malik Benson
A premium they did not need to pay, Malik Benson a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick161
Rnd5
Louis Moore
No drama and no debate, Louis Moore went about where he belonged in No. 161. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick224
Rnd7
Desmond Reid
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Desmond Reid well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick230
Rnd7
Thaddeus Dixon
Thaddeus Dixon in the 230th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick257
Rnd7
J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant at the 257th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
