Draft Grade — Lions
Overall B
ValueC NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureC
The Lions turned the phones into found money: B.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Lions reached some 44 spots for Max Llewellyn, and value like that does not grow back. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They banked enough surplus on Lew to cover a lot of smaller sins. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

The Lions clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Caleb Lomu
In the 18th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick50 Rnd2 Michael Taaffe
No drama and no debate, Michael Taaffe went about where he belonged in No. 50. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick88 Rnd3 Connor Lew
Connor Lew at pick No. 88 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick97 Rnd3 Max Llewellyn
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Max Llewellyn well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick118 Rnd4 Will Lee III
A quiet steal in pick 118: Will Lee III for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick130 Rnd4 Skyler Gill-Howard
A reach for Skyler Gill-Howard in Round 4, Pick 30; a little patience would have been rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick155 Rnd5 Sam Roush
Sam Roush in pick No. 155 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick161 Rnd5 Nate Boerkircher
A wild overpay on Nate Boerkircher in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick165 Rnd5 Lander Barton
Lander Barton at the 165th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick186 Rnd6 VJ Payne
VJ Payne at pick 186 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick203 Rnd6 Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at the 203rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick212 Rnd6 Luke Altmyer
They reached a country mile for Luke Altmyer at No. 212, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Pick222 Rnd7 Eli Heidenreich
Eli Heidenreich in Round 7, Pick 6 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick246 Rnd7 Jack Pyburn
Value said wait; Jack Pyburn in slot 246 says they were not listening. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
