Draft Grade — Patriots

Good, not great, for the Patriots: B-.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent pick 247 on Riley Mahlman, a name the board had a full 48 spots lower. The bottom line is a respectable B-.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Golday. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Kenyon Sadiq
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a red-zone target to build around, and a steal at that.
Pick63 Rnd2 Blake Miller
They did well to land Blake Miller in pick 63, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick95 Rnd3 Jake Golday
Taking Jake Golday in slot 95 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick125 Rnd4 Malachi Lawrence
Malachi Lawrence at the 125th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick131 Rnd4 Eli Raridon
Eli Raridon at No. 131 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It fills a real need, too.
Pick169 Rnd5 DJ Campbell
A conviction pick on DJ Campbell at pick No. 169 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick189 Rnd6 Pat Coogan
A straight-up fair deal on Pat Coogan at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Pick200 Rnd6 Ted Hurst
Ted Hurst in the 200th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick207 Rnd6 Kaelon Black
They paid sticker price for Kaelon Black in slot 207, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick210 Rnd6 Eric McAlister
Steal is underselling it; Eric McAlister at Round 6, Pick 31 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick247 Rnd7 Riley Mahlman
They talked themselves into Riley Mahlman at No. 247, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
