FutureB-
The Bears let Lew fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-. When a board-topper like Connor Lew slides to Round 3, Pick 25, you do not overthink it, and the Bears did not. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with interior defensive lineman the one that mattered most.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom. The dealing was even money, start to finish.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In the 25th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
Pick57
Rnd2
Lee Hunter
The board had Lee Hunter higher than pick No. 57, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick60
Rnd2
A.J. Haulcy
Value with a capital V on A.J. Haulcy in Round 2, Pick 28, a genuine coup. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick89
Rnd3
Connor Lew
They will replay Connor Lew at the Round 3 slot for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick214
Rnd6
Eric McAlister
Eric McAlister in the 214th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick239
Rnd7
TJ Hall
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 239 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick241
Rnd7
Luke Altmyer
No edge and no loss on Luke Altmyer in No. 241; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
