Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Patriots a B-.

The Patriots spent real capital to be 38 picks early on Markel Bell, and the board is going to hold them to it. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Omar Cooper Jr.
In the 31st pick they get a matchup problem out wide, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63 Rnd2 Markel Bell
Markel Bell at pick No. 63 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick95 Rnd3 Keyron Crawford
They reached a country mile for Keyron Crawford at No. 95, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick125 Rnd4 Bishop Fitzgerald
Value with a capital V on Bishop Fitzgerald in pick 125, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick131 Rnd4 Bryce Lance
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Bryce Lance at Round 4, Pick 31. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick169 Rnd5 Bryce Boettcher
They took Bryce Boettcher at par in the 169th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick189 Rnd6 Dae'Quan Wright
A quiet steal in pick 189: Dae'Quan Wright for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick200 Rnd6 Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at the Round 6 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick207 Rnd6 Kaelon Black
A straight-up fair deal on Kaelon Black at slot 207, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick210 Rnd6 Josh Moten
Josh Moten in Round 6, Pick 31 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick247 Rnd7 Diego Pavia
A reasonable price with a little left over, Diego Pavia in the 247th pick. It fills a real need, too.
