Singh DRAFTING FOR THEPanthers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Panthers, and a B- to prove it. The Panthers spent real capital to be 48 picks early on Eric O'Neill, and the board is going to hold them to it.
The offensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They went 4 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Jermod McCoy
In the Round 1 slot they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick48
Rnd2
Ja'Kobi Lane
A straight-up fair deal on Ja'Kobi Lane at No. 48, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick80
Rnd3
Mikail Kamara
Mikail Kamara at the 80th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick116
Rnd4
Austin Romaine
A wild overpay on Austin Romaine in the 116th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick151
Rnd5
Eric O'Neill
Eric O'Neill at Round 5, Pick 11 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick156
Rnd5
Vincent Anthony Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Vincent Anthony Jr. in slot 156, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick196
Rnd6
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at slot 196 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick231
Rnd7
James Smith
James Smith at pick No. 231 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
