Good, not great, for the Ravens: B-. The Ravens torched the value chart for Braylan Shelby, taking him 55 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.
They banked enough surplus on Johnson to cover a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick45
Rnd2
Caleb Lomu
Caleb Lomu at Round 2, Pick 13 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick80
Rnd3
Anto Saka
A big swing on Anto Saka at No. 80, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
Pick115
Rnd4
Emmett Johnson
Taking Emmett Johnson in pick No. 115 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick152
Rnd5
Niki Prongos
They read the board right and Niki Prongos was the payoff at pick 152. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick160
Rnd5
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart in the 160th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick172
Rnd5
Kevin Coleman Jr.
Kevin Coleman Jr. at pick No. 172 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick173
Rnd5
Braylan Shelby
Braylan Shelby at the 173rd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick242
Rnd7
Pat Coogan
A real head-scratcher, Pat Coogan in the 242nd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick243
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at slot 243 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick249
Rnd7
Kevin Jennings
Fair-plus on Kevin Jennings, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick252
Rnd7
Peyton Bowen
They took Peyton Bowen at par in Round 7, Pick 36, which is nothing to complain about. A minor itch, scratched.
