Good, not great, for the Vikings: B. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Vikings spent No. 252 on Marvin Jones Jr., a name the board had a full 86 spots lower.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The Slaughter value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Jeremiyah Love
In the 18th pick they get a workhorse for the backfield at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick49
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Taking Dillon Thieneman in No. 49 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick82
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
The board fumbled Jake Slaughter all the way to slot 82, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick100
Rnd3
Treydan Stukes
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Treydan Stukes at the Round 3 slot is the proof. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick124
Rnd4
Red Murdock
They reached into another round for Red Murdock, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick173
Rnd5
Dae'Quan Wright
A straight-up fair deal on Dae'Quan Wright at Round 5, Pick 35, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick194
Rnd6
Kobe Baynes
Kobe Baynes at pick No. 194 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick234
Rnd7
Zavion Thomas
Zavion Thomas slipping to the 234th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick240
Rnd7
Thaddeus Dixon
Thaddeus Dixon at slot 240 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick252
Rnd7
Marvin Jones Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Marvin Jones Jr.. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
