Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C-
ValueD- NeedB TradesC- FutureD
A mixed bag for the Patriots, and a C- to match.

The Patriots put a flag in the ground for Namdi Obiazor, 224 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. It lands right in the middle: a C-, no more, no less.

Roberts falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

So much rides on Caleb Lomu that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Caleb Lomu
In slot 18 they get a long-term starter on the line, even if it was a touch early.
Pick31 Rnd1 Gabe Jacas
In the Round 1 slot they get a bendy edge with upside, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63 Rnd2 Dametrious Crownover
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dametrious Crownover. The roster fit checks out.
Pick95 Rnd3 Eli Raridon
A wild overpay on Eli Raridon in pick No. 95, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick125 Rnd4 Behren Morton
They reached a country mile for Behren Morton at No. 125, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick131 Rnd4 Jam Miller
Jam Miller at pick 131 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick171 Rnd5 Namdi Obiazor
They talked themselves into Namdi Obiazor at the 171st overall pick, and the board did not agree. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick191 Rnd6 Domani Jackson
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Domani Jackson at slot 191 is the proof. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick198 Rnd6 Ephesians Prysock
Nothing to complain about; Ephesians Prysock went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick202 Rnd6 VJ Payne
VJ Payne at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick212 Rnd6 Jalen Stroman
Jalen Stroman in the 212th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick247 Rnd7 Chase Roberts
They barely believed it either: Chase Roberts still on the board at pick No. 247. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
