FutureB-
The Packers lost the trade table, and the D+ tells the story. The war room fell hard for Marvin Jones Jr., and it showed at pick 257: 81 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Put together, it is a D+.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. They banked enough surplus on Johnson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
The veteran additions, Denzel Ward chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick52
Rnd2
Chris Johnson
A tidy bit of business in No. 52, where Chris Johnson graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick66
Rnd3
Jake Golday
Jake Golday in pick No. 66 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick70
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
Nice patience on Jake Slaughter, who had no business lasting to the 70th overall pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick84
Rnd3
Drew Shelton
No edge and no loss on Drew Shelton in slot 84; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick120
Rnd4
Hezekiah Masses
By-the-book stuff, Hezekiah Masses at pick 120 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick140
Rnd5
CJ Daniels
Value with a capital V on CJ Daniels in the Round 5 slot, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Pick158
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
No drama and no debate, Davison Igbinosun went about where he belonged in No. 158. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick199
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at the 199th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick236
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
A reach on Trey Zuhn III in Round 7, Pick 20; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick254
Rnd7
Cameron Ball
Cameron Ball at pick 254 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick257
Rnd7
Marvin Jones Jr.
Marvin Jones Jr. at the 257th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
