Draft Grade — Vikings
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesB+ FutureB-
The Vikings let Reese fall and pounced. Final grade: B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Vikings were there to profit. Arvell Reese, the No. 6 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 1 slot. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The cost of the Williams reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick26 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
The board fumbled Arvell Reese all the way to the 26th pick, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick49 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
They read the board right and Dillon Thieneman was the payoff at slot 49. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick63 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
They robbed the room for Jake Slaughter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick82 Rnd3 Jonah Coleman
A slide stopped in pick No. 82, with Jonah Coleman worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick84 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
Nice patience on Malachi Fields, who had no business lasting to pick 84. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick134 Rnd4 Skyler Gill-Howard
By-the-book stuff, Skyler Gill-Howard at the 134th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick158 Rnd5 Davison Igbinosun
A reasonable price with a little left over, Davison Igbinosun in Round 5, Pick 20. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick166 Rnd5 Tanner Koziol
Tanner Koziol is a better player than the Round 5 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick194 Rnd6 Trey Zuhn III
They jumped the gun on Trey Zuhn III, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick219 Rnd7 J. Michael Sturdivant
A reach for J. Michael Sturdivant in slot 219; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick220 Rnd7 PJ Williams
PJ Williams at pick 220 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick234 Rnd7 Keyron Crawford
Keyron Crawford at the 234th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick240 Rnd7 Luke Hasz
Luke Hasz in Round 7, Pick 24 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
