Draft Grade — Dolphins

Stockton should have been long gone. The Dolphins pounced, and earned a B-.

Thirty-one other rooms let Gunner Stockton slide, and the Dolphins were the ones holding the card at the 227th pick. Highway robbery. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. It is not that Ponds is a bad player; it is that the Dolphins had louder needs to answer first.

Nwankpa has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Jermod McCoy
They took Jermod McCoy at par in pick No. 11, which is nothing to complain about. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick43 Rnd2 Caleb Banks
Caleb Banks slipping to slot 43 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick75 Rnd3 Connor Lew
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Connor Lew at pick 75. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick87 Rnd3 Carter Smith
They did well to land Carter Smith in the 87th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick111 Rnd4 D'Angelo Ponds
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. D'Angelo Ponds in No. 111 leaves wide receiver, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
Pick120 Rnd4 Jaishawn Barham
Nice patience on Jaishawn Barham, who had no business lasting to the Round 4 slot. The roster fit checks out.
Pick149 Rnd5 Xavier Nwankpa
They went early on Xavier Nwankpa in the 149th pick, and the value did not follow. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick227 Rnd7 Gunner Stockton
Taking Gunner Stockton in Round 7, Pick 11 is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
