Draft Grade — Lions
Overall C+
ValueD NeedA- TradesB- FutureB-
The Lions landed square in the muddy middle: C+.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Lions reached some 100 spots for Eric Gentry, and value like that does not grow back. The final tally is a middling C+.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Curry at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Akheem Mesidor
In the 17th overall pick they get a problem off the edge, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick50 Rnd2 Max Iheanachor
A wild overpay on Max Iheanachor in pick 50, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick118 Rnd4 Caden Curry
Caden Curry is a better player than Round 4, Pick 18 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick155 Rnd5 Sam Roush
Sam Roush in pick No. 155 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick186 Rnd6 Bud Clark
Bud Clark in slot 186 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick203 Rnd6 Thaddeus Dixon
A straight-up fair deal on Thaddeus Dixon at the 203rd pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick212 Rnd6 Eric Gentry
Eric Gentry in Round 6, Pick 33 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick222 Rnd7 Keyron Crawford
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Keyron Crawford well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
