FutureB-
The Raiders finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Raiders spent the Round 7 slot on Max Bredeson, a name most had 139 spots down the list.
They have staked the next five years on Fernando Mendoza, which is the only story that really matters here. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Sarratt. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick14
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 14th overall pick they get the heartbeat of the defense at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick47
Rnd2
Lee Hunter
A straight-up fair deal on Lee Hunter at the 47th pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick67
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds at Round 3, Pick 3 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick78
Rnd3
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
The board fumbled Emmanuel McNeil-Warren all the way to slot 78, and they scooped it up. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick102
Rnd4
Elijah Sarratt
Taking Elijah Sarratt in pick No. 102 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick117
Rnd4
Parker Brailsford
They paid sticker price for Parker Brailsford in pick 117, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick134
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun slid further than he should have, and the 134th overall pick is lovely value for the cornerback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick175
Rnd5
Marlin Klein
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marlin Klein. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick182
Rnd6
Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa in the 182nd pick is fair value, right on his grade. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick185
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
A reach on Pat Coogan in pick No. 185; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick219
Rnd7
Max Bredeson
Max Bredeson at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
