The Lions land in the muddy middle: C+.

The Lions torched the value chart for Gabriel Rubio, taking him 85 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.

That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Slaughter.

Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

So much rides on Zion Young that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Zion Young
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get juice off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick50 Rnd2 Monroe Freeling
Monroe Freeling at the 50th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick59 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
A slide stopped in slot 59, with Jake Slaughter worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick106 Rnd4 Kyle Louis
Kyle Louis at pick 106 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick118 Rnd4 Sam Roush
Sam Roush at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Pick155 Rnd5 Nadame Tucker
By-the-book stuff, Nadame Tucker at pick No. 155 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick186 Rnd6 Jalen Catalon
They reached a country mile for Jalen Catalon at slot 186, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick203 Rnd6 Keyron Crawford
This one needs a full-page explanation: Keyron Crawford in pick No. 203, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick212 Rnd6 Gabriel Rubio
A big swing on Gabriel Rubio at No. 212, well ahead of any board in the building. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick222 Rnd7 Haynes King
They liked Haynes King enough to skip the value, taking him in the 222nd overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
