Draft Grade — Chiefs

Larceny in No. 74 lands the Chiefs a B-, Stowers and all.

You could see the war room lean forward. Eli Stowers at pick No. 74 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

They will regret leaving linebacker for another day if the season turns on it. The Mesidor pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.

Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Mansoor Delane
In the 9th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. More want than need.
Pick29 Rnd1 Akheem Mesidor
In No. 29 they get a double-digit-sack hope, reach and all. A real need, handled.
Pick40 Rnd2 Chris Bell
They paid sticker price for Chris Bell in the 40th pick, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick74 Rnd3 Eli Stowers
Somehow Eli Stowers was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier tight end value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick109 Rnd4 Emmett Johnson
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Emmett Johnson. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick148 Rnd5 Chris McClellan
Chris McClellan at Round 5, Pick 8 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick169 Rnd5 Drew Allar
A tidy bit of business in pick 169, where Drew Allar graded well above the range. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick176 Rnd5 Travis Burke
No edge and no loss on Travis Burke in slot 176; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick210 Rnd6 VJ Payne
A quiet steal in No. 210: VJ Payne for less than the market said. A minor itch, scratched.
