FutureB-
The Jets found their guy under center in Mendoza: B. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Jets did exactly that with Dane Key in No. 108.
They have staked the next five years on Fernando Mendoza, which is the only story that really matters here. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer. With safety and interior defensive lineman unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In pick No. 2 they get the arm they will build around. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick4
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In pick 4 they get a green-dot type in the middle, though they paid up to get him. More want than need.
Pick16
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
A surprising call. With safety and interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent the Round 1 slot on Sonny Styles, a linebacker they were not short of.
Pick33
Rnd2
Colton Hood
They paid sticker price for Colton Hood in the 33rd pick, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick44
Rnd2
Ja'Kobi Lane
Ja'Kobi Lane at Round 2, Pick 12 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick66
Rnd3
Mikail Kamara
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mikail Kamara well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick108
Rnd4
Dane Key
They talked themselves into Dane Key at the 108th pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick122
Rnd4
Drew Allar
Drew Allar at pick 122 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick136
Rnd4
Jadarian Price
Jadarian Price in the 136th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick175
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell in slot 175 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
