Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Commanders turned the phones into found money: B+. The Commanders ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They banked enough surplus on Thieneman to cover a lot of smaller sins. It is not that Fitzgerald is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first.
The Black pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Chris Brazzell II
In pick 30 they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Nice patience on Dillon Thieneman, who had no business lasting to the 43rd overall pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick65
Rnd3
Germie Bernard
Germie Bernard in No. 65 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick71
Rnd3
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun in pick No. 71 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick91
Rnd3
Jalon Kilgore
They went early on Jalon Kilgore in slot 91, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick104
Rnd4
Brian Parker II
They paid sticker price for Brian Parker II in Round 4, Pick 4, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick126
Rnd4
Bishop Fitzgerald
A want over a need in the 126th pick: Bishop Fitzgerald adds a safety while edge rusher and quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick143
Rnd5
Chris McClellan
They took Chris McClellan at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick147
Rnd5
Nate Boerkircher
Nate Boerkircher at the 147th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick187
Rnd6
Domani Jackson
Nothing to complain about; Domani Jackson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick209
Rnd6
Kaelon Black
A wild overpay on Kaelon Black in slot 209, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick223
Rnd7
Jeremiah Wright
Jeremiah Wright in the 223rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
