njjj DRAFTING FOR THEBills

Draft Grade — Bills
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B for the Bills. You can draft well and still miss the point. The Bills did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to linebacker, which was the need that mattered most. No fireworks, but a solid B.
They banked enough surplus on Williams to cover a lot of smaller sins. Reaching for Mateer left real value on the table behind him. They went 6 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Ryan Williams
They let Ryan Williams come to them and pounced at pick No. 26. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick60
Rnd2
Aaron Flowers
Aaron Flowers in the 60th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick91
Rnd3
John Mateer
They paid up for John Mateer at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick126
Rnd4
C.J. Fite
A clean, defensible pick in slot 126 with a little surplus value in C.J. Fite. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick166
Rnd5
Hollywood Smothers
A slide stopped in No. 166, with Hollywood Smothers worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick220
Rnd7
Marquis Johnson
Marquis Johnson at Round 7, Pick 4 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick228
Rnd7
Riley Williams
Riley Williams in pick 228 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
