Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueB+ NeedB+ TradesB+ FutureD
Grand theft in the 69th overall pick: the Texans steal Slaughter and grade out a B-.

This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Jake Slaughter, the No. 43 name on the board, stolen at the Round 3 slot. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

The cost of the Davis II reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

The trade work was a quiet net positive.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Jeremiyah Love
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get a centerpiece for the ground game, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Emmanuel Pregnon
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Emmanuel Pregnon. The roster fit checks out.
Pick59 Rnd2 A.J. Haulcy
A tidy little value on A.J. Haulcy in the 59th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jake Slaughter
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jake Slaughter in No. 69, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick106 Rnd4 Keylan Rutledge
A reach for Keylan Rutledge in pick No. 106; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick123 Rnd4 Tanner Koziol
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tanner Koziol well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick244 Rnd7 Fred Davis II
Fred Davis II in the 244th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
