The Jets won the night they stopped Scott from sliding. Grade: A-. Thirty-one other rooms let Keionte Scott slide, and the Jets were the ones holding the card at the 103rd overall pick. Highway robbery.
The cost of the Allar reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Jets indulged a want in Styles while a need in edge rusher and interior defensive lineman stayed open.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In No. 12 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. Need was not the driver here.
Pick16
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
Makai Lemon in Round 1, Pick 16 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick20
Rnd1
Kenyon Sadiq
In pick 20 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value. More want than need.
Pick33
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Sonny Styles in the 33rd overall pick leaves edge rusher and interior defensive lineman for later.
Pick44
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
A clean, defensible pick in the 44th pick with a little surplus value in Emmanuel Pregnon. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick92
Rnd3
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in the Round 3 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick103
Rnd4
Keionte Scott
Circle this one: Keionte Scott at slot 103 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick116
Rnd4
Drew Allar
Drew Allar at pick No. 116 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick140
Rnd4
Kaytron Allen
Kaytron Allen at pick No. 140 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick179
Rnd5
Bryce Boettcher
They did well to land Bryce Boettcher in the Round 5 slot, just ahead of his grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick228
Rnd7
Josh Cameron
They will replay Josh Cameron at Round 7, Pick 12 for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick242
Rnd7
John Michael Gyllenborg
A quiet steal in slot 242: John Michael Gyllenborg for less than the market said. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
