Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
The Chiefs bled value on every deal, hence the D-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chiefs did exactly that with Bryce Lance in pick No. 74. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. However the rest shakes out, Haulcy at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Spencer Fano
In slot 9 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick40
Rnd2
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds in pick 40 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick57
Rnd2
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy in the 57th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick74
Rnd3
Bryce Lance
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Bryce Lance well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick109
Rnd4
Jack Endries
A straight-up fair deal on Jack Endries at Round 4, Pick 9, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick146
Rnd5
Beau Stephens
Beau Stephens in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick176
Rnd5
Matt Gulbin
They paid sticker price for Matt Gulbin in No. 176, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
