Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
B-
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesC+
FutureB-
The Commanders checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. Give the room credit for holding its nerve. Max Klare came off the board 17 spots later than his grade, and the Commanders were the ones waiting when he fell.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The Brown reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In pick 27 they get a three-down second-level presence, and a steal at that.
Pick58
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman at No. 58 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick71
Rnd3
Darrell Jackson Jr.
Darrell Jackson Jr. slid further than he should have, and Round 3, Pick 7 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick82
Rnd3
Max Klare
Nice patience on Max Klare, who had no business lasting to the 82nd overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick91
Rnd3
Malik Muhammad
The board had Malik Muhammad higher than pick No. 91, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick126
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds in the Round 4 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick145
Rnd5
Eric Rivers
They took Eric Rivers at par in Round 5, Pick 7, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick152
Rnd5
Jadarian Price
Value with a capital V on Jadarian Price in the Round 5 slot, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick165
Rnd5
Kage Casey
Kage Casey in pick 165 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick187
Rnd6
Aaron Anderson
Good price on Aaron Anderson in the 187th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick198
Rnd6
DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell in the 198th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick223
Rnd7
Raylen Wilson
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Raylen Wilson. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick242
Rnd7
Barion Brown
They paid a round early for Barion Brown in slot 242, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
