Draft Grade — Colts

FutureB
The Colts overdrafted Smith and paid the price. Grade: F. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Jake Smith, 309 picks early at the 80th overall pick. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.
Hairston falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
RJ Oben
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptor off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Pick46
Rnd2
Cobee Bryant
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cobee Bryant well ahead of where he belonged. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick57
Rnd2
Luke Lachey
A big swing on Luke Lachey at pick 57, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick80
Rnd3
Jake Smith
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jake Smith. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick114
Rnd4
Donald Chaney
Donald Chaney at No. 114 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick117
Rnd4
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman at the 117th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick155
Rnd5
Alex Mastromanno
Alex Mastromanno in pick No. 155 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick189
Rnd6
Carson Vinson
They reached a country mile for Carson Vinson at the 189th pick, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick215
Rnd6
Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston in pick 215 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
