Draft Grade — Buccaneers

FutureA
The phones sank the Buccaneers this weekend: C+. The Buccaneers clearly saw something nobody else did in Eric O'Neill, taking him 36 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. It is not that Styles is a bad player; it is that the Buccaneers had louder needs to answer first. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
The Lew value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In pick No. 23 they get a three-down second-level presence, outstanding value to boot.
Pick44
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots still to address, they spent the 44th pick on Sonny Styles, a linebacker they were not short of.
Pick75
Rnd3
Connor Lew
They barely believed it either: Connor Lew still on the board at the Round 3 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick113
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
Michael Trigg at pick 113 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick151
Rnd5
Eric O'Neill
Eric O'Neill at Round 5, Pick 12 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick192
Rnd6
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton in slot 192 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick229
Rnd7
Luke Altmyer
Luke Altmyer slid further than he should have, and pick 229 is lovely value for the quarterback. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
