FutureA-
The Buccaneers turned the phones into found money: A-. The war room fell hard for Patrick Payton, and it showed at the Round 5 slot: 51 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
The Nelson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
In pick No. 32 they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot.
Pick63
Rnd2
CJ Allen
CJ Allen slipping to slot 63 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick95
Rnd3
Austin Barber
Austin Barber at the 95th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick172
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
They talked themselves into Patrick Payton at pick 172, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Pick256
Rnd7
Malachi Nelson
Malachi Nelson in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
