The Broncos jumped the board for Klein and paid for it: F. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Broncos would have aced it. Marlin Klein at the 111th overall pick is 61 spots clear of where he belonged. A F, plain and simple.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. On value alone, Styles makes the weekend a net positive.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Sonny Styles at slot 33. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick35
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
They paid sticker price for Caleb Banks in No. 35, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick62
Rnd2
Malachi Fields
A conviction pick on Malachi Fields at Round 2, Pick 30 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick108
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
A real head-scratcher, DeMonte Capehart in pick No. 108 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick111
Rnd4
Marlin Klein
Value said wait; Marlin Klein in the 111th overall pick says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick160
Rnd5
Le'Veon Moss
Le'Veon Moss at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick170
Rnd5
VJ Payne
VJ Payne in pick No. 170 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick187
Rnd6
Chase Roberts
Chase Roberts at pick 187 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick246
Rnd7
Nolan Rucci
Nolan Rucci at No. 246 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick256
Rnd7
Logan Taylor
No edge and no loss on Logan Taylor in the Round 7 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick257
Rnd7
Dijon Johnson
They reached a country mile for Dijon Johnson at the 257th pick, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
