Nobody dealt better than the Bengals this weekend: B. The rest of the league had time to spare on Solomon Tuliaupupu; the Bengals did not wait, grabbing him 89 spots ahead at No. 223. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They will answer for taking safety early while tight end, linebacker and other spots went begging. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In the Round 1 slot they get a downhill hitter at safety, and a steal at that.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter at slot 43 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick60
Rnd2
Michael Taaffe
A curious use of Round 2, Pick 28. Tight end, linebacker and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Michael Taaffe did not.
Pick74
Rnd3
Caleb Tiernan
Caleb Tiernan in pick No. 74 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick109
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
A straight-up fair deal on D'Angelo Ponds at the 109th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick123
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance in the 123rd pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick188
Rnd6
Gracen Halton
They took Gracen Halton at par in the 188th pick, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick195
Rnd6
Princewill Umanmielen
A wild overpay on Princewill Umanmielen in the 195th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick201
Rnd6
Cam Calhoun
Cam Calhoun at the Round 6 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick223
Rnd7
Solomon Tuliaupupu
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Solomon Tuliaupupu. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick247
Rnd7
Dylan Edwards
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dylan Edwards in slot 247, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
