Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Panthers a B. Everything else got attention, and cornerback got none. That is a strange way for the Panthers to leave a draft.
The Hunter value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Nwankpa pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Their trades came out a wash either way.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick19
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In pick 19 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick51
Rnd2
Germie Bernard
They paid sticker price for Germie Bernard in the 51st overall pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick83
Rnd3
Lee Hunter
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 19, with Lee Hunter worth more than the price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick130
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
They did well to land Keylan Rutledge in No. 130, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick156
Rnd5
Sam Roush
Fair-plus on Sam Roush, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick157
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
They went early on Xavier Nwankpa in the Round 5 slot, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick198
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster at slot 198 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick235
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
Nothing to complain about; Riley Mahlman went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick255
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
A clean, defensible pick in Round 7, Pick 39 with a little surplus value in Jordan Hall. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
