Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureB
More right than wrong for the Commanders, and a B to prove it. You build a draft on nights like this. Devin Moore had no business being available in pick 120, and the Commanders did the only sane thing and turned in the card. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Reaching for Payne left real value on the table behind him. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. The Commanders clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get the heartbeat of the defense. More want than need.
Pick38
Rnd2
Chris Johnson
Nothing to complain about; Chris Johnson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick69
Rnd3
Connor Lew
The board had cheaper options than Connor Lew at No. 69, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick71
Rnd3
Christen Miller
A tidy bit of business in slot 71, where Christen Miller graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick84
Rnd3
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick120
Rnd4
Devin Moore
They robbed the room for Devin Moore here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick147
Rnd5
Demond Claiborne
A conviction pick on Demond Claiborne at the 147th overall pick that the board grades a round light. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick148
Rnd5
DeMonte Capehart
Value with a capital V on DeMonte Capehart in the 148th pick, a genuine coup. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick168
Rnd5
VJ Payne
Value said wait; VJ Payne in pick 168 says they were not listening. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jeff Caldwell
Somehow Jeff Caldwell was still sitting there in pick No. 209, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
