The Bengals cashed the board's mistake on Wheatley: B-. The board owed the Bengals one, and it paid up: Zakee Wheatley, the No. 73 name on the board, sitting there at pick No. 110 like a gift left on the doorstep. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. The Bengals indulged a want in Wheatley while a need in tight end, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In pick 10 they get a rangy last line of defense, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Pick41
Rnd2
Isaiah World
No edge and no loss on Isaiah World in the 41st pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick72
Rnd3
Connor Lew
The board had Connor Lew higher than pick No. 72, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick110
Rnd4
Zakee Wheatley
A curious use of No. 110. Tight end, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Zakee Wheatley did not.
Pick189
Rnd6
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at the Round 6 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick199
Rnd6
Trinidad Chambliss
A quiet steal in slot 199: Trinidad Chambliss for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
Pick226
Rnd7
Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart slipping to the 226th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
