FutureB
A masterclass at the trade table lands the 49ers a B+. Boards are made to be trusted, and the 49ers shredded theirs for Nadame Tucker. He came off 41 spots early, and the room will hear about it. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. However the rest shakes out, Hurst at that price is a win they earned. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick49
Rnd2
A.J. Haulcy
No edge and no loss on A.J. Haulcy in slot 49; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick58
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
Anthony Hill Jr. in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick92
Rnd3
Logan Jones
Logan Jones in the 92nd overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick113
Rnd4
Mike Washington Jr.
Mike Washington Jr. in the 113th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick127
Rnd4
Nadame Tucker
Value said wait; Nadame Tucker in pick 127 says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick133
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
A slide stopped in No. 133, with Davison Igbinosun worth more than the price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick138
Rnd4
Malik Benson
They did well to land Malik Benson in pick No. 138, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick139
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
They took DeMonte Capehart at par in Round 4, Pick 39, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick151
Rnd5
Marlin Klein
Marlin Klein at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick152
Rnd5
Kage Casey
Kage Casey at pick 152 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick163
Rnd5
Kaleb Proctor
Kaleb Proctor at the 163rd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick196
Rnd6
Ted Hurst
Ted Hurst in slot 196 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick227
Rnd7
Jeff Caldwell
A clean, defensible pick in No. 227 with a little surplus value in Jeff Caldwell. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249
Rnd7
Cole Payton
Cole Payton at the 249th pick is money in the bank, a quarterback taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
