Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C+
ValueC- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The jury is out on the Patriots. For now, C+.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent the 200th overall pick on Keyron Crawford, a name the board had a full 94 spots lower. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Getting Hurst where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

If Kenyon Sadiq and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Kenyon Sadiq
In No. 31 they get a red-zone target to build around at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick63 Rnd2 Chase Bisontis
They talked themselves into Chase Bisontis at pick 63, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Pick95 Rnd3 Dametrious Crownover
They reached a country mile for Dametrious Crownover at Round 3, Pick 31, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick125 Rnd4 Kyle Louis
A big swing on Kyle Louis at the 125th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick131 Rnd4 Bud Clark
A wild overpay on Bud Clark in the 131st overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick169 Rnd5 Ted Hurst
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ted Hurst at slot 169. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick189 Rnd6 Patrick Payton
A real head-scratcher, Patrick Payton in No. 189 is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick200 Rnd6 Keyron Crawford
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Keyron Crawford well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick207 Rnd6 TJ Hall
A reach for TJ Hall in the 207th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick210 Rnd6 Deven Eastern
Deven Eastern in slot 210 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick247 Rnd7 Eli Heidenreich
Eli Heidenreich slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
