Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
B-
ValueC-
NeedA-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Saints and Echoles: B-. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Saints watched Will Echoles slide 56 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
They will need Cobb to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Clev Lubin
In the 8th overall pick they get a bendy edge with upside, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick42
Rnd2
Andrew Sprague
This one needs a full-page explanation: Andrew Sprague in pick No. 42, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick73
Rnd3
Will Echoles
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Will Echoles in No. 73, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick132
Rnd4
Justin Evans
Nice patience on Justin Evans, who had no business lasting to the 132nd pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick136
Rnd4
Jeremiah Cobb
Jeremiah Cobb at pick 136 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick148
Rnd5
Ashton Hampton
Ashton Hampton at Round 5, Pick 10 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick170
Rnd5
Christian Gray
A conviction pick on Christian Gray at slot 170 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick188
Rnd6
Eric Singleton Jr.
Eric Singleton Jr. at the Round 6 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
