Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C
ValueC- NeedB+ TradesD+ FutureB-
The 49ers let Bowen fall into their laps, and walked away with a C.

The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Peyton Bowen, the 138th overall pick, roughly 77 picks past where he belonged. It washes out to a C, no better and no worse.

The Barkate reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. It is not that Bowen is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first.

That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 Lance Heard
In No. 27 they get a long-term starter on the line, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick58 Rnd2 Cooper Barkate
A wild overpay on Cooper Barkate in pick No. 58, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick92 Rnd3 Dashawn Spears
Dashawn Spears at pick 92 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick127 Rnd4 J'Koby Williams
Good price on J'Koby Williams in the 127th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick133 Rnd4 Kameryn Crawford
Kameryn Crawford at Round 4, Pick 33 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick138 Rnd4 Peyton Bowen
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent slot 138 on Peyton Bowen, a safety they were not short of.
Pick166 Rnd5 Hollywood Smothers
Hollywood Smothers in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick171 Rnd5 Quay'sheed Scott
Quay'sheed Scott at the 171st pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor need, but a need all the same.
