Jdj029 DRAFTING FOR THESteelers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B
ValueA
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Steelers and McKinney: B. Somebody in Round 6, Pick 35 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Steelers sat still while DJ McKinney, the No. 135 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The Steelers indulged a want in Montgomery while a need in quarterback stayed open. Every board in the league had Oatis lower, and that gap is the story.
They went 8 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Jeremiah Smith
In slot 21 they get a matchup problem out wide, and a steal at that.
Pick53
Rnd2
Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa
Taking Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Pick76
Rnd3
KJ Bolden
A top-tier safety at a bargain, KJ Bolden in pick 76, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick85
Rnd3
Trevor Lauck
Trevor Lauck at pick No. 85 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick99
Rnd3
Luke Montgomery
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went offensive lineman with Luke Montgomery while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
Pick121
Rnd4
Rod Moore
Circle this one: Rod Moore at No. 121 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick135
Rnd4
Jyaire Hill
They took Jyaire Hill at par in Round 4, Pick 35, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick159
Rnd5
Raleek Brown
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Raleek Brown in the 159th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick213
Rnd6
Lawson Luckie
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Lawson Luckie. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick214
Rnd6
DJ McKinney
Somehow DJ McKinney was still sitting there in the 214th pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jalen Thompson
No drama and no debate, Jalen Thompson went about where he belonged in the Round 7 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick237
Rnd7
Jehiem Oatis
A reach for Jehiem Oatis in Round 7, Pick 21; a little patience would have been rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
