FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Patriots. The Patriots did not so much draft Cole Payton as overpay for him, 31 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
It is not that Rodriguez is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first. They banked enough surplus on Thomas to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In the 31st pick they get a three-down second-level presence, outstanding value to boot.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jacob Rodriguez
A curious use of the 63rd overall pick. Interior defensive lineman and running back needed the pick; a linebacker in Jacob Rodriguez did not.
Pick95
Rnd3
Caden Curry
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Caden Curry. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick125
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance at Round 4, Pick 25 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick131
Rnd4
Isaiah World
No edge and no loss on Isaiah World in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick169
Rnd5
Dallen Bentley
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dallen Bentley well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
Pick189
Rnd6
DJ Campbell
Value with a capital V on DJ Campbell in the 189th pick, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick207
Rnd6
Cole Payton
Cole Payton in pick No. 207 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick208
Rnd6
Jeff Caldwell
Jeff Caldwell at slot 208 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick210
Rnd6
VJ Payne
VJ Payne slipping to the Round 6 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick232
Rnd7
Thaddeus Dixon
A tidy bit of business in the 232nd overall pick, where Thaddeus Dixon graded well above the range. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick247
Rnd7
Zavion Thomas
Zavion Thomas in No. 247 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
