Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
C-
ValueF
NeedB
TradesB
FutureA
The Saints left with their quarterback, and a C- to match. The rest of the league had time to spare on Avery Johnson; the Saints did not wait, grabbing him 257 spots ahead at Round 1, Pick 5.
Getting Lemon where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Everything downstream of Avery Johnson depends on Avery Johnson, and the building knows it.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
If Avery Johnson and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Avery Johnson
In pick 5 they get the face of the franchise, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Pick72
Rnd3
PJ Williams
A swing that ignored the value entirely, PJ Williams well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick97
Rnd3
Sammy Omosigho
Sammy Omosigho in the 97th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick102
Rnd4
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick129
Rnd4
Isaiah Nwokobia
Isaiah Nwokobia at pick No. 129 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick138
Rnd4
Dontay Corleone
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Dontay Corleone reach the 138th pick and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
Pick146
Rnd5
Zach Rice
Zach Rice at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick161
Rnd5
Cam Calhoun
Cam Calhoun at slot 161 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick169
Rnd5
Makai Lemon
They barely believed it either: Makai Lemon still on the board at pick 169. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick185
Rnd6
Demond Claiborne
Circle this one: Demond Claiborne at pick No. 185 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
