Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall B-
ValueC- NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Panthers, and a B- to prove it.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but DJ Harvey at slot 48 is 169 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

The Concepcion steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The linebacker hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the linebacker spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick16 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
In No. 16 they get a centerfielder for the defense at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick48 Rnd2 DJ Harvey
DJ Harvey at Round 2, Pick 16 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick80 Rnd3 Domonique Orange
No drama and no debate, Domonique Orange went about where he belonged in the 80th overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick116 Rnd4 Zion Young
They robbed the room for Zion Young here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick151 Rnd5 Aaron Anderson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Aaron Anderson in the Round 5 slot, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick156 Rnd5 KC Concepcion
Taking KC Concepcion in pick 156 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick196 Rnd6 Chris Johnson
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Chris Johnson in Round 6, Pick 16, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick231 Rnd7 Blake Shapen
Blake Shapen in No. 231 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
