The phones sank the Jets this weekend: D+. Nobody had Shamar Easter this high, and it is not close. The Jets reached 265 spots to get him at pick 33. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Barham.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. The Marquez Valdes-Scantling deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Zachariah Branch
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Pick28
Rnd1
Xavier Nwankpa
In the 28th pick they get a centerfielder for the defense, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33
Rnd2
Shamar Easter
They left a pile of value on the table to take Shamar Easter this early at slot 33. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick38
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
Anthony Hill Jr. at pick 38 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick53
Rnd2
Denzel Boston
The board fumbled Denzel Boston all the way to No. 53, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick103
Rnd4
Hezekiah Masses
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Hezekiah Masses. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick140
Rnd4
Nadame Tucker
Nadame Tucker at Round 4, Pick 40 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick179
Rnd5
Jaishawn Barham
Somehow Jaishawn Barham was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick216
Rnd6
Markis Deal
They talked themselves into Markis Deal at the 216th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
Pick228
Rnd7
Matthew Sluka
Matthew Sluka in pick 228 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick242
Rnd7
Turner Corcoran
Turner Corcoran in pick No. 242 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
