Draft Grade — Saints
Overall C-
ValueD NeedB TradesF FutureB-
Simpson is the Saints' new face under center. Grade: C-.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Saints took Raul Aguirre Jr. a full 418 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.

On value alone, Rivers makes the weekend a net positive. Whatever Ty Simpson becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Hit on Ty Simpson and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Ty Simpson
In slot 8 they get their quarterback of the future, reach and all. A real need, handled.
Pick42 Rnd2 Raul Aguirre Jr.
A wild overpay on Raul Aguirre Jr. in the Round 2 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick79 Rnd3 Brian Parker II
Brian Parker II in the 79th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick132 Rnd4 Kamari Ramsey
Kamari Ramsey at No. 132 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick136 Rnd4 PJ Williams
PJ Williams at pick 136 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick148 Rnd5 Caden Curry
Caden Curry at pick No. 148 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick170 Rnd5 Eric McAlister
Eric McAlister at the Round 5 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick188 Rnd6 Chandler Rivers
They will replay Chandler Rivers at pick No. 188 for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick226 Rnd7 Zane Durant
Taking Zane Durant in the 226th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick231 Rnd7 Jared Brown
They reached a country mile for Jared Brown at Round 7, Pick 15, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
