The Steelers landed square in the muddy middle: C+. The Steelers went off the board in a big way for Malik Spencer, 151 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
The Mendoza pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The Steelers indulged a want in Jatta while a need in edge rusher and linebacker stayed open.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Blake Miller
In pick 21 they get a blindside protector, a steep price for the projection.
Pick53
Rnd2
Omar Cooper Jr.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Omar Cooper Jr.. The roster fit checks out.
Pick76
Rnd3
Fernando Mendoza
Fernando Mendoza in the Round 3 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick85
Rnd3
Demond Claiborne
This one needs a full-page explanation: Demond Claiborne in pick No. 85, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick99
Rnd3
Isaiah Jatta
A curious use of the 99th pick. Edge rusher and linebacker needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Isaiah Jatta did not.
Pick135
Rnd4
Justin Joly
They barely believed it either: Justin Joly still on the board at the 135th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick159
Rnd5
Antonio Kite
They left a pile of value on the table to take Antonio Kite this early at the Round 5 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Pick214
Rnd6
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson in pick 214 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick224
Rnd7
Malik Spencer
They reached into another round for Malik Spencer, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick237
Rnd7
Kaleb Proctor
Steal is underselling it; Kaleb Proctor at the 237th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
