Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D+
ValueF NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
The Cowboys have some explaining to do after a D+.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Trey Holly at pick No. 20 is 301 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.

Getting Bernard where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Overton pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback, offensive lineman and other spots still on the board.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Eric O'Neill
In slot 12 they get a double-digit-sack hope, a steep price for the projection.
Pick20 Rnd1 Trey Holly
In the 20th pick they get a centerpiece for the ground game, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Pick112 Rnd4 LT Overton
They bypassed pressing needs at cornerback, offensive lineman and other spots to take LT Overton, an edge rusher that was not the priority.
Pick150 Rnd5 Brenen Thompson
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Brenen Thompson in the 150th overall pick, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick177 Rnd5 Gabe Jacas
Gabe Jacas in pick 177 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick215 Rnd6 Keyshaun Elliott
No edge and no loss on Keyshaun Elliott in No. 215; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick221 Rnd7 Owen Heinecke
Owen Heinecke at Round 7, Pick 5 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick225 Rnd7 Germie Bernard
They will replay Germie Bernard at pick No. 225 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
