Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall B-
ValueF NeedB+ TradesB FutureA
The Chiefs let Mendoza fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-.

You build a draft on nights like this. Fernando Mendoza had no business being available in slot 146, and the Chiefs did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

O'Neill has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.

Jordan Mason gives the group a proven body among the projects. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick40 Rnd2 Monroe Freeling
They left a pile of value on the table to take Monroe Freeling this early at the Round 2 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick49 Rnd2 Tanner Koziol
Tanner Koziol in Round 2, Pick 17 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick74 Rnd3 Jeremiyah Love
Jeremiyah Love in pick 74 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Pick97 Rnd3 Malachi Lawrence
This one needs a full-page explanation: Malachi Lawrence in No. 97, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick109 Rnd4 Eric O'Neill
A real head-scratcher, Eric O'Neill in pick No. 109 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick146 Rnd5 Fernando Mendoza
Fernando Mendoza at the 146th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick176 Rnd5 Dani Dennis-Sutton
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Dani Dennis-Sutton in the 176th overall pick, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
